Silchester revisited

Sunday 1st August was the last day of the British Festival of Archaeology. We had picked out the events we wanted to attend but unfortunately after driving round Basingstoke looking for Basing House which we had last visited over 15 years ago, we discovered the event had been cancelled. Nothing daunted we decided to head off for Silchester. When our children were small we used to visit the site quite often but as they grew up and the patterns of our lives changed we had fewer outings. Reading University’s Archaeology Department dig there every year, and last year we attended the open day, which we found fascinating. This year the excavations were again open to the public and I was delighted to be able to revisit the site. We then visited the church and walked round the walls.
