Endangered Languages

There are about 6500 languages in the world today but it is estimated that about half of them will have disappeared in the next 50 to 100 years. Endangered Languages Week was held at SOAS this week with the opportunity to meet endangered languages. Loss of language means loss of culture and identity as well as human knowledge. Fortunately there are programmes in place working to document, maintain and revitalise these languages. One of these is the Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project.
